I know that blindly following etiquette without question is silly--social rules should be used as a guideline rather than an absolute law. But as someone who works in a building where the only way up is via an elevator, I find that following a little elevator "etiquette" is important:
1. Allow people to exit the elevator before boarding it yourself. This just reduces the awkwardness of bumping into people.
2. Pressing the "close door" button after someone exits a floor may reduce the time you're in the elevator by a few seconds, but it also reduces the amount of time people have to catch an elevator. Overall, I would suggest using this button only on the rare occasion that it is necessary. In my experience elevators pretty much take care of themselves with regard to closing the door.
3. If others stand between you and your floor (i.e., the elevator door is blocked due to a crowd) it is usually better to announce that the elevator has reached your floor (e.g., "this is my floor") rather than silently pushing people out of the way.
I am posting this largely due to reading Elevator Rules. I believe most of the "rules" on that site are over played (and some of them outright impractical). However, a few listed items gave remembrance of personal unhappiness due to other people's behavior.
